Update 2/11/2011
Since writing this I have learned that the tribulation period will actually last about
7 years and 4 months.
----------------------------------------
I've been 'watching' end-time prophecy for about 20 years now. I thought I knew a lot of things...I went along with what the more popular authors thought would happen. But now I think I know very little. The two things I think I know is that America is Babylon and her destruction begins the Day of the Lord. Of that, I'm convinced.
See:
Act 1, Scene 1 "Day of the Lord"
I believe there is plenty of scripture to support this. Everything else, though, I have to see the scriptural evidence myself. Until then, I have an open mind about how things will play out.
That being said, one thing that leads me be believe a seven year tribulation is Ezekiel 39.
v9 "Then those who dwell in the cities of Israel will go out and set on fire and burn the weapons, both the shields and bucklers, the bows and arrows, the javelins and spears; and they will make fires with them
for seven years.
v10 They will not take wood from the field nor cut down [any] from the forests, because they will make fires with the weapons; and they will plunder those who plundered them, and pillage those who pillaged them," says the Lord GOD.
[Note: Russian weapons can be burned because they are made from
Lignostone.]
This seems to be a clue...a supporting scripture. When else could this be fulfilled? During the 1000 year reign? But that would put the Gog/Magog battle at the end of the tribulation. We know from Ezekiel 38 that the purpose of God intervening (to destroy 5/6th of Gog's army) is to turn the hearts of the Jews back to their God and to magnify His name among all nations.
Ezekiel
38:23
Thus I will
magnify Myself and sanctify Myself, and I will be known in the eyes of many nations. Then they shall know that I [am] the LORD."
39:7
So I will make My holy name known
in the midst of My people Israel, and I will not let them profane My holy name anymore. Then the nations shall know that I am the LORD, the Holy One in Israel.
Another thing that seems to support a seven year tribulation are the two witnesses. It seems the pattern in scripture is that they will give witness for 3.5 years, then be killed.
Revelation 11:3
And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy one thousand two hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth."
Now look at the scene after they are killed:
v9...Possible now because of satellites.
Revelation 11:10
And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them, make merry, and send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.
Does this sound like the end of the tribulation? We know that at the end there will be very few left alive. This sounds more like well before the end. They can still "make merry" and send gifts to one another. But we know at the end of the tribulation there will be utter hopelessness and despair. Mankind will have nearly annihilated himself from the face of the earth.
When Babylon is destroyed, at the very start of the Day of the Lord, the geopolitical landscape will be thrown into disarray. After a very decisive victory, this "nation from the north", Russia and her Muslim alliance, will go after Israel. The world, still in shock at America's sudden demise, will only be able to offer up a lame response as they watch Israel being surrounded.
Ezekiel 38:13
Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, '
Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?' " '
Isn't the AntiChrist in control at this time? Well, maybe not. We know that he is given power to exercise his authority for 42 months. Folks, things take time to develop. I think it's very likely that the first half of tribulation is a progression, working towards what we see play out in the second half.
Now look at what happens when God intervenes:
Ezekiel 38:20
so that the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts of the field, all creeping things that creep on the earth,
and all men who [are] on the face of the earth shall shake at My presence. The mountains shall be thrown down, the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.'
Is this the same event?:
Isaiah 24:20
The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again.
Revelation 6:12
I looked when He opened the sixth seal, and behold, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood.
Revelation 6:17
For the great day of His wrath
has come, and who is able to stand?"
HAS come. They know full well that they are within the Day of the Lord. Contrast this with Isaiah 13, which talks about the start of the Day of the Lord.
Isaiah 13:6
Wail, for the day of the LORD [is]
at hand! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.
This chapter links the destruction of Babylon and the start of the Day of the Lord. It's AT HAND. It's starting or just about to start.
